Ljubljana, 4 Jan - Amnesty International Slovenia will mark 11 January, the sixth anniversary of the first transfers to Guantánamo Bay, with demonstration in the centre of Ljubljana. Our aim is to urge the US government to close Guantánamo. January 2008 marks six years of illegal detention at Guantánamo Bay and elsewhere in the US led "war on terror".
The demonstration will start at Prešernov trg, on January 11th at 13 p.m. Protestors will then head towards the Modern gallery where they will perform stress positions in which Guantánamo detainees are being held. The demonstration will end in front of US Embassy.
To mark the anniversary Amnesty International will lead a worldwide protest denouncing torture and unlawful detentions.
Hundreds of people remain detained in Guantánamo, without charge and with little hope of a fair trial. Despite international outrage and the US authorities' own stated wish to close the camp, Guantánamo is still holding detainees illegally. Hundreds languish in cruel, inhuman and degrading conditions.
Amnesty International has consistently condemned the acts of terrorism in recent years that have left thousands of civilians dead or injured. Amnesty International is clear, however, that real security from such attacks can only be achieved through strengthening the human rights framework, not through undermining it by resorting to unlawful practices.
